Zane Safrit

  • Zane Safrit is the former CEO of Conference Calls Unlimited. His small business CEO ramblings have been posted at http://zanesafrit.typepad.com for several years now.

    3-4 years ago Conference Calls Unlimited ceased investing in traditional advertising. Truth be known, it wasn't an investment. It was a donation. And the ROI was that of a donation: A thank-you note, a towel and a jar of jelly-beans.

    He directed that budget to their customers' experience and incentivizing their staff.

    It works. Customer churn was less than 1%. Sales conversion ratio is over 75%. Profits tripled. Conference Calls Unlimited was profiled in MarketingSherpa and the book Testify: How Remarkable Companies Are Creating Customer Evangelists.

A Night with Al Green

My best friend from junior high school is Al Green, from Greensboro. He's a Reverend, too.

Last night the Reverend Al Green from Greensboro and I went to see the other Al Green.

He's a Reverend, too. He's a pretty good singer, member of the Hall of Fame for Soul, Gospel and Rock n Roll.

Reverend Al Green and his band played last night in Iowa City as part of the Inaugural Celebration for Chet Culver, Governor Incumbent of Iowa. Governor Chet always was a big fan of Al's. After tonight, he's a huge fan of him.

The voice of Rev. Al Green is so awesome. Full range, full power, full presence on stage. Outstanding band with 3-piece horn section, bass-rhythm-lead guitar, 2 drummers, 2 keyboardists, 2 backup singers. Great show.

I've waited 30 years to see this Al Green. Luckily it was at the best venue possible: Hancher Auditorium in Iowa City.

I recorded it on a handheld digital recorder. The whole show. Surprisingly good quality. I'll post some pics from the show as soon as I figure out how to download them from my new camera phone.

In the meantime enjoy Rev. Al Green, live at Hancher Auditorium. We did. (60 Meg file size. I'd recommend downloading, then listening.)

Here's a couple of his favorites and where in the recording you can find them:

* Let's Stay Together -  16:05

* Motown Medley - 32:56. (4 Tops, Otis Redding...)

* I'm Still in Love - 37:00-ish.

(In the concert the bass wasn't this noticeable. Sorry, but it's a handheld recorder. Turning down the bass helps.

But his voice comes through...wow...I'm listening to this last song...amazing range. )

* Tired of being alone - 44:00

* Love and happiness - 50:00

Each song is linked to its lyrics...so you can sing along. Find someone you love and sing along with them. Hey. It's Al Green; It's meant to be sung like that.
