Business Week Online (seriously) wrote about mashups last month. What are mashups? Well...Mashups are homespun combinations of internet services.
Here's a few examples from the article:
* HousingMaps.com It's a combination of the rental properties shown on craigslist with the pushpin graphic element from Google Maps. The listings on Craigslist appear as pushpins on a map as do addresses found using Google Maps. Since April this year over 500,000 people have visited this site.
* Chicagocrime.org. This site takes crime statistics and overlays them on a Google map. 1.2 million visitors ...in its first two weeks.
* Amazon Light. It's a fast loading version of Amazon that includes links to Yahoo and Google. Too many links it seems as Amazon asked the creator to modify how it linked to competitors.
And many of these sites included in 'mashups' are helping. After all it only makes their site's resources more valuable and expands their audience.
And this is only the beginning. "Rave on" will soon be replaced with "mash on".
